So I finally upgraded from wordpress 2.0.8. My old theme is broken with:
Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in …/wp-content/themes/blackhat/header.php on line 14
Perhaps it’s time for a new theme anyway. In the meantime, you can get to the forums by clicking here.

When will the “top blah, blah list of 2009″ madness stop?
I’m thinking that once Wolfram|Alpha releases its “top mathematical equations of 2009″ list, we’ll know that it’s time to move on.
In the meantime, YouTube is taking great delight in telling us the kind of junk we all enjoyed watching online. If this is any indication of our what we watch on the web, I’m pretty sure that TV networks don’t have to worry about online video cannibalizing their audiences:
Most Watched YouTube videos (Global):
1. Susan Boyle – Britain’s Got Talent (120+ million views)
2. David After Dentist (37+ million views)
3. JK Wedding Entrance Dance (33+ million views)
4. New Moon Movie Trailer (31+ million views)
5. Evian Roller Babies (27+ million views)
Most Watched music videos on YouTube (Global)*:
1. Pitbull “I Know You Want Me” (82+ million views)
2. Miley Cyrus “The Climb” (64+ million views)
3. Miley Cyrus “Party in the U.S.A.” (54+ million views)
4. The Lonely Island “I’m On a Boat” (48+ million views)
5. Keri Hilson “Knock You Down” (35+ million views)
If I were Susan Boyle, I’d get cracking on a cover of a Miley Cyrus song pretty darn quick!
I’ll leave you with my favorite from the list:

As you may, or may not, know, I’m somewhat of a photography addict. I don’t claim to be a professional–just addicted!
Anyway, I had my trusty Nikon D80 at PubCon and snapped over 100 photos. You can see all of my PubCon Las Vegas photos here.
In the meantime, here’s a selection of my favorites:
Matt Cutts knows Bing is getting closer behind Google.
Look what I found on my way to the MGM Grand Tweetup!
Brett Tabke hosts another excellent PubCon
The Trackur party was a big hit!
Just about every session room was packed!

I hesitate to share my PubCon presentation with you. You see, it includes all of the sneaky things I do to keep track of my competitors.
Well, actually, the presentation isn’t going to give too much away, because I tend not to go text-heavy with my slide decks–preferring to let my vocal chords do the heavy-lifting.
Fortunately, two awesome bloggers were on hand to capture the advice I spilled at about a 1000-words per minute.
For those of you who couldn’t get to PubCon, here are my slides:
Next up is Andy Beal.
He says if you like what you hear, tweet about it. His name is @andybeal. If you don’t like it, he says his name is @lisabarone. Harsh, Andy. Harsh.
What: Track competitors news – their company name, the CEO, product names, locations, mentions of new features, etc. Why? You’re looking for new products, new features, media placement, and sympathetic bloggers.
Rants: Tracking their company name + sucks, defectives, crap, poor, dirty expensive. There’s an opportunity there for you to poach their clients, to promote yours as an alternative or even to improve your own product.
Employees: Track their blogs, social profiles, photos, videos, Flickr accounts, Facebook pages, etc. Why? Loose lips sink brands. Egos ego bragging. There may be damaging evidence. Look for potential hires.
Jobs: look at their job listings. It will give you information about products they have in development, new locations, lost employees, etc.
Google: Google Alerts give you email or RSS. Do it as it happens, not once a week. Google Sidewiki. Local listings.
Tweets: Follow their employees, follow the company profile. Set up search.twitter.com alerts. Create private Twitter lists. He has private Twitter lists that he uses to spy on people. You don’t want to be on those lists.
Facebook: Look at the fan page. what kind of content are they putting out? Maybe you can get some ideas. Who are their fans? Search Posts by Everyone.
URLs: DomainTools.com offers Registration Alerts that will inform you any time your competition creates a new domain name. With Mark Alerts, it will tell you whenever a domain name uses a particular keyword.
Oodle: Andy’s favorite meta search for job listings. Type in company name, filter it down by location or skillset. They have RSS alert so you don’t even have to worry about it.

Congratulations YouTube!
The video site is celebrating over 1 billion views per day and the 3 year anniversary of being acquired by Google with…some nasty spam videos.
No, this just in. YouTube is celebrating with a new logo. The spam is something it doesn’t actually have any control over–and that’s going to be a big problem.
RWW is reporting an uptick in spammy videos posted to YouTube:
Researchers at Kaspersky Lab have recorded a mass mailing of spam emails containing a link to a video advertisement on YouTube. Although in the past, spammers have have attempted to lure people into clicking links by claiming the link would display a YouTube video, this is the first case in which the link actually did. In this particular incident, the video in question is a Russian ad promoting industrial real estate.
As Sarah Perez points out, will YouTube take any action to remove these videos. After all, the “spam” is the mass emails being sent out, while the videos themselves seem to not violate any YouTube policies. Hmm, where have we seen this before? Oh yeah, Blogspot hosted blogs.
Whether Google decides to take any action to prevent YouTube being a pawn in the game of email spam, is yet to be seen. Whether it can actually prevent it anyway, is another question. In the meantime, YouTube will happily accept the poor schmucks that were fooled into watching a spammy YouTube video–after all, that all contributes to the 1 billion views, baby!
