If you’ve been involved with SEO or online marketing for any length of time, chances are you’ve escaped the confines of your office and ventured out into the real world to meet like minded marketers. Perhaps you’re a conference regular attending events like Pubcon, SES, or SMX. If you’re like me and tens of thousands of other online marketers, you’ve also checked out your local meetup scene.
Meetups are gatherings of people who all share a common profession or interest. There are meetups covering almost every aspect of online marketing including SEO, SEM, Affiliate Marketing, Publishing, and Programming.
Most online marketing meetups are organized by local marketing organizations or specific individuals or companies looking to increase exposure for their own services. While motives may vary, most meetup organizers provide a valuable service for their local marketing community by offering insightful presentations, information sharing, and networking.
Some of the great things I’ve experienced attending meetups include client acquisition, client education, finding new hires, conversing with other marketing professionals, and learning really interesting information from some great speakers (shout out @btabke).
If you need to step up your game or just want the opportunity to share ideas and participate in your local marketing community, you need to check out your local meetups.
To help you down this path, I’ve compiled a list of 2-3 meetups for the 31 NFL cities. If you feel there’s a great meetup I missed, please mention it in the comments along with the name of your city.

Remember when Google won the bid to migrate the City of Los Angeles over to Gmail and other Google Apps?
Yeah, it’s not going so well.
In fact, the migration is going sooooo slowly that Google is having to compensate L.A. around $135,000 for the delay. So, what’s the hold-up?
Well, apart from the fact that this is a local government organization–the poster-child of inefficiency–it appears the LAPD is the bottleneck:
…while over 10,000 city employees have now been switched over to Google, she hopes to have up to 6,000 more moved in mid-August. After that, Levin said, the city will focus on “a more detailed schedule” for getting the roughly 13,000 members of the police department switched over.
Apparently the police department is concerned about the security of Google Apps.
That snorting sound you hear is coming from Redmond. Microsoft lost out on this bid to Google, but I’m sure they’re enjoying this latest setback for Google’s enterprise strategy.

Google has a real buddy in the airline industry with Virgin America. During last year’s holiday travel season Google offered free WiFi on all Virgin America flights. Now, Google and Virgin have expanded the in-flight maps offered to travelers as they can now get topographic information about where they are and more.
Google’s LatLong blog tells more
….as a part of our continued partnership with Virgin America, we’ve completely updated the Google Maps data on the touchscreens of every airplane seat. As before, the map shows you almost exactly where you are, and you can zoom and pan to explore. Now, with our beautiful terrain view and fresh Google data, the maps are not only prettier, but also highlight mountains, elevation and other natural features. In other words, it more closely matches what you’d actually see if you had cloud-penetrating eyesight and looked out the window from 35,000 feet.
I’m all for anything that passes the time on a long flight. Of course, having never flown Virgin America I can only imagine that this would keep my ADD at rest for a few minutes.

The real point here is that Google is expanding far beyond the confines of search in an effort to become less reliant on their search ad business. They have a long way to go for sure since search is a disproportionate percentage of revenue but Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Google, of course, is helping Virgin who is expanding its fleet by 60 planes (making Airbus very happy). How? It just so happens that they announced these plans and improvements on the very same day. Gee, what a coincidence!
So Google and Virgin America are buddies. I wonder if there is room for other airline relationships for Google? After all, the people on those planes are firing up their smartphones as soon as they land to figure out what’s next. You think Google is interested in being top of mind at that point in time?

Effective time management is one of my daily pursuits as the more I get involved in, the more important optimizing my time online allows me to do more things in less time.
There are tools that are useful to both the entrepreneur, as well as to a team you may may need to establish for a large campaign.
What social productivity tools are most effective? What tools can an online business use to promote and market their product or service in a positive, viral manner?
Although there are several tools that can be used in maximizing social productivity, there are four especially useful tools that can accelerate a user’s production levels- and one bonus.
Ping.fm
Ping is considered one of the heavyweight tools in social networking productivity. This tool allows a user to use a post, status update, tweet, or video to spread across all aspects of their social media arsenal. Ping is very powerful and all encompassing with the ability to have an update sent to over 40 different social sites simultaneously. This is a big timesaver and reduces the amount of time the user would spend trying to post the same or similar information to several different sites. Although Ping is a true workhorse in social productivity, the user still has options and can choose what sites and platforms they want to post to and customize their communications as they deem necessary.
Hootsuite
This tool is completely web-based and free of charge to users. The main attraction about Hootsuite is its ability to automate Twitter updates and photos. Other impressive capabilities of the tool allow users to manage multiple Twitter profiles and schedule any tweets in advance. Users also have the ability to monitor certain keywords and create various friend groups which can help them to successfully manage large accounts. With Hootsuite, users can also feed RSS updates automatically to their Twitter stream.
Selective Twitter Status
This is a very useful tool if a person uses Facebook and Twitter exclusively and wants to integrate the two platforms in order to reach a wider segment of the social community. Selective Twitter Status can be added to a Facebook profile and once it is installed, adding a small code of #fb will post selected tweets to a Facebook status.
Socialize Your Cause
Socialize Your Cause is a highly impressive social media campaign management tool that is designed to bring exposure to a cause by using multiple social channels. It can be used also to manage several social media accounts, schedule emails and messaging items to members, and has a sophisticated analytics and tracking tool to give the user statistical information that will help in his or her campaign cause and maximize social communications.
What is this bonus you ask about? Well, this isn’t necessarily social media related…per-se, but I think it’s essential to anybody running a team to achieve these social media goals that they’re aiming for. There are many GTD items out there that can handle productivity for individuals and projects, such as Midnight Inbox, as well as tools for larger teams within a business, such as hosted exchange and cloud platforms such as Zoho. Utilize these to mobilize your team- and rock the social media world at any given time in the day.

In January 2008, Ask CEO Jim Lanzone stepped down. He moved to Redpoint Ventures, a VC firm, to be their entrepreneur-in-residence. But his latest project brings him back to search: Clicker, an online TV video search engine. Kinda.
Lanzone is CEO of the video service, which launched yesterday at TechCrunch50 into private beta. Clicker aims to be a TV guide for online video—”the most comprehensive way to find the video content you’re looking for on the web.”
What makes Clicker different from the myriad other video search engines out there? TechCrunch reports:
[Clicker] creates a structured database of programming, organizing shows by things like network, genre, and show name. This type of data not only allows for better search results, but it allows you to browse content without having to do text-based searches, which you probably won’t be doing when television and future web-enabled tablets start to serve up this content. Clicker already has a deal with Boxee.
The goal is really to be the best search engine for video content. Clicker will point you in the direction of whatever you are looking for (and will do embeds if they’re available), but won’t serve up the videos themselves. They will also delve into surfacing content not explicitly produced for television, but is still high quality web video content. But they don’t want to be YouTube, which is cluttered with user-generated content. Clicker is going for a different market.
Clicker will also allow users to edit and submit information about shows wiki-style.
My question: what’s with all those vowels?! Are you sure you didn’t mean “clickr”? Way to shoot yourselves in the foot, guys.
Naturally, the first real question is what’s their business model. And the answer is typical of search engines: advertising, both search and display. However, they also plan to offer premium accounts, “which the company envisions might be used for storing your favorite videos online, kind of like a DVR of sorts.”
We’re obviously still learning new things about how to do online video all the time, as Hulu has shown us. But is there room for another video search engine—and if so, will Clicker be it? What do you think?
